Who am I?

Why am I doing this?

My name is John Chaney. I’m a 3rd year neuroscience major at the University of Texas at Austin. I’m president of Texas Crew, club rowing team here at UT. I also participate student researcher in the Fonken Lab which broadly focuses on the interactions between the nervous system and endocrine system. The project I am most involved in at the moment is looking into the circadian regulation of peripheral immune cell migration into the brain (here’s a link to my most recent presentation: (insert link here)).

I started Meters for Minds with the express purpose of raising funds for Alzheimer’s Research and awareness for a lifestyle that mitigates the risk of getting Alzheimer’s disease. From November 26 to 27, I’ll be rowing 24 hours straight to raise $5,000 for this cause.

According to Alzheimer’s Disease International, in 2020, there were over 55 million people affected by dementia, to include Alzheimer’s. By 2030, this number is projected to hit 78 million, and then, in 2050, it is projected to climb to 139 million.

With numbers growing exponentially, almost doubling every 20 years, there is a newfound urgency to find ways to prevent, treat, and cure Alzheimer’s disease. Meters for Minds aims to make a splash in this space, with a focus on advocating for a lifestyle that actively prevents Alzheimer’s disease.
